Wesleyan vs. Mill Creek 9th grade (8/14/09): Wesleyan opens with a 3-0 win! A true pitcher's dual, Wesleyan JV's opening game saw stellar pitching, solid defense, and clutch hitting. Behind India Welton's strong performance on the mound, the Wolves did not allow any runs, and Welton did not give up any walks while strking out 6. Facing a tough Mill Creek pitcher, the Wolves offense was held scoreless until the 5th inning. Leading off the inning with a gritty at bat, Courtney O'Leary drew a rare walk and made Mill Creek pay. Natalie Robinson perfectly executed a sacrifice bunt (on the first strike!) which brought O'Leary around to score. The Wolves then turned out a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the 5th, and the Wolves bats struck again in the 6th with 2 more insurance runs scored by Elise Abernathy and Katie Frerking. After another solid defensive effort in the bottom of the 6th, the Wolves came out on top 3-0.
Wesleyan vs. St. Pius X (8/14/09): Wolves Overwhelm the Lions 15-0! Behind another outstanding pitching performance by India Welton, the Wolves looked in top form offensively and defensively as they were too much for the Lions to handle. In just 3 innings, the Wolves piled on 15 runs in game that saw almost everyone hit and score. The Wolves defense provided 1-2-3 innings behind Welton's solid pitching. Wesleyan vs. Brookwood (8/15/09): Wolves Come up Just Short Against Solid Brookwood JV The Wolves showed great poise in this loss to Brookwood as a few questionable calls contributed to the Wolves first loss of the season. Wesleyan was once again solid defensively, backing up an impressive effort by pitcher, India Welton. Natalie Robinson ripped a double to left center to lead off the 3rd to ignite the Wolves bats. Robinson was later called out at home on a close and questionable play at the plate. Rallying from a 2-0 deficit, the Wovles got big hits from Katie Frerking, CaraMia Tsirigos, and Victoria DiStasi to cut the Broncos lead to 3-2 in the 6th. The 80 minute time limit ended up being the Wolves biggest enemy, as the game was called at the conclusion of the 6th, and the Wolves lost 3-2. Wesleyan vs. Grayson (8/15/09): Settlage's Solid Debut Boosts the Wolves to Grayson Tournament Championship! In her pitching debut, Sarah Settlage provided a gritty 6 inning performance which helped propel the Wolves to the Championship game of the Gold Division of the Grayson Tournament. The Wolves once again provided solid defense, which was highlighted by an unassisted double play by third baseman Courtney O'Leary. The Wolves offense was fueled by leadoff Elise Abernathy, Brittany Stevens, Katie Frerking, Madeline Adair, and O'Leary. The Wolves 8-4 win over the Rams sent them to the much anticipated championship game (which was rained out- to the frustration of all players, coaches, and fans). But, the Wolves had a great tournament and made a strong statement for Wesleyan softball.
Wesleyan vs. Spalding (8/20/09): Wolves Impressive in Home Opener The Wolves bats came out hot against Spalding as the Wesleyan offense torched Spalding for 11 runs. Wesleyan's offensive explosion was led by Victoria DiStasi, whose 2-run triple nearly went over the fence, Sarah Settlage, Maddy Brehmer, and Natalie Genthert. Settlage also put in a fine performance on the mound allowing no earned runs. The Wolves defensive effort was highlighted by an unassited double play recorded by first baseman Rebecca Christopher. This team effort was a great way for the Lady Wolves to begin the regular season at home! Wesleyan vs. Jefferson (8/24/09): Christopher and Robinson Spark Wolves to Huge Come from Behind Win at Home! A focus for the Wesleyan Lady Wolves this season is staying focused and never giving up no matter the circumstances. The Jefferson Lady Dragons put Wesleyan to the test, but the Lady Wolves came out on top. Behind a strong pitching performance by India Welton, the Lady Wolves took an early 4-0 lead into the 4th behind the bats of Natalie Genthert, Madeline Adair, Elise Abernathy, and Natalie Robinson. However, the top of the 4th saw the Lady Wolves usually solid defense crumble. Three errors in the inning resulted in 3 Lady Dragon runs. With just a one run lead the Wolves battled back, but found themselves down 1 run heading into the bottom of the 7th. Never doubting themselves, the Lady Wolves roared back to win 7-6 behind the clutch hitting and stellar baserunning of Rebecca Christopher, Abernathy, and Robison (who recorded the game winning RBI). The Lady Wolves showed great poise and determination as they improved their record to 5-1. Wesleyan vs. Blessed Trinity (9/3/09): Wolves Drop Heartbreaker in Extra Innings The Wesleyan Lady Wolves and Blessed Trinity Titans battled all the way to the wire on Thursday night. Blessed Trinity earned a quick 1-0 lead in the 1st that would last all the way until the bottom of the 7th. Victoria DiStasi led off the 7th for the Wolves with a big single up the middle. She was then moved around on a beautiful bunt by Natalie Genthert and eventually scored the tying run on a wild pitch. With a tied score, the game went into extra innings under the International Tie Breaker rules. Blessed Trinity was able to score their girl from second, but were allowed no more runs. In the bottom of the 8th, Maddy Brehmer laid down a clutch bunt to move base runner India Welton (who pitched a superb game!) to 3rd. With just one out, Rebecca Christopher ripped a line drive that was headed for the hole between short and third, but the Blessed Trinity shortstop made a great play to keep Welton at 3rd. Sarah Settlage then came to the plate with two outs. Showing determination and toughness, Settlage hit a hard ground ball up the middle that the pitcher barely snagged to end the game. A one run loss, especially in extra innings, is tough for any team to take, but the Lady Wolves showed great fight, focus, and execution.
